John Molson School of Business hosts ceremony to announce winners
Fuller Landau LLP and Concordia University’s John Molson School of Business announce the winners of the Fuller Landau Family Business Awards. Now in its second year, the awards recognize Quebec-based family-owned businesses whose policies and business practices have a positive impact on the community and stimulate economic growth.
Les Entreprises Daniele Henkel was named the award recipient in the Medium Business Category. Founded in 1997 by its namesake Daniele Henkel, the company is a manufacturer, distributor, laboratory and training centre specializing in non-surgical products for the professional health and beauty industry. Heritage Linencraft was named winner of the Large Business Category. The company, which has been in business for more than 60 years, specializes in the importation and distribution of bed and bath linens.
The 2012 Fuller Landau Family Business Award for a large-sized business was awarded to Heritage Linencraft pictured here with Fuller Landau Managing Partner Michael Newton.
“This Family Business Award provides Fuller Landau with a great opportunity to recognize Quebec’s leading entrepreneurs,” said Michael Newton, Managing Partner of Fuller Landau LLP. “The entries we received showed a lot of promise, and the recipients represent the core values of what this award is all about. Congratulations to our 2012 winners.”
Award winners were evaluated based on financial success of the company, quality of business and family linkages, multi-generational family involvement, contributions to the community and industry, and innovative business practices or strategies. Nominations were reviewed by a panel of judges co-chaired by Michael Carney and Andrea Dawson of the John Molson School of Business. The five voting members of the judging panel include: Terry Didus, Partner, Heenan Blaikie LLP; Michele Desjardins, President, Koby Consulting and Senior Associate, Lansberg, Gersick & Associates; J. Sebastian van Berkom, President and CEO, van Berkom and Associates Inc.; as well as last year’s winners Norman Hébert Jr., President and CEO of Groupe Park Avenue Inc. and Leslie Machan Jr., Vice President of Pension Planning Centre.
“Our panel of judges was overwhelmed with the caliber of the applications we received this year,” said Dawson. “Picking this year’s winners was not an easy feat.
We were very impressed by the family-owned businesses our 2012 recipients represent. Each of these businesses has a solid history and reputation in Quebec.”
Also recognized at the ceremony were the winners of the Best Graduate Student Family Business Paper Award category. Katty Lara, Santiago Molano and Bethsabeth Paz submitted an outstanding paper from their Entrepreneurial Family Business course. The judges felt that the MBA students’ report on publishing house, Groupe HMH provided an in-depth analysis, using multiple analytical frameworks, such as success factors of entrepreneur, stakeholder analysis and value-chain analysis, and provided recommendations about the leadership succession planning.
The awards were recently announced at the Fuller Landau Family Business Awards evening at the John Molson School of Business.
